I have not heard much about the Cimzia shot for Rheumatoid Arthritis. So I will be researching a little about it in the next two weeks. Are you on Cimzia or have you ever taken Cimzia for Rheumatoid Arthritis? How well did it work for you? What type of side effects did you have while taking Cimzia?

In this documentary style video Matthew Nickels, freelance producer in Los Angeles discusses stem cells. He works on commercials and promos and has been a co-producer of a documentary. His father had leukemia nothing worked so they did a bone marrow transplant. Bone marrow transplant is the same thing as an adult stem cell transplant, according to Matthew. His uncle matched his dad and he had a bone marrow transplant in 2003. It regenerates your immune system and helps makes your body cancer free. Adult stem cells were discovered in the 1960's. His father developed Graft Versus Host Disease in 2010 and passed away, this is a side effect that can happen with donor bone marrow transplants. The body accepts the cells but later on it may realize it is not their cells and attacks them.

I found this "Stem Cell Therapies for Chronic Pain" video by UC Davis very interesting. This is UC Davis Health System's ongoing series of community forums about stem cell research. The first 8 minutes is an overview of the speakers. The speaker discusses stem cells, pain, current spinal pain double blind trials and a recent government study on chronic pain in America which found there are 116 million Americans suffering from chronic pain, costing around $635 billion in treatments and lost productivity. They also answered some interesting questions at the end of the session. Maybe we can go to one of UC Davis Health System's forums on stem cells sometime. Lloyd just headed out to check out the Frontiers of Rheumatology, he was able to get a media pass to sit in the back of the classes, no camera this time. Such a shame, he does great photo coverage of events, even educational seminars.

My disease activity according to the new Vectra DA blood test for Rheumatoid Arthritis Disease Activity
Yesterday I went back to the Rheumatologist to get results of my blood tests and to have an ultra sound done on my thyroid. We went over the Vectra DA blood test, which I scored a 33. This means my Rheumatoid Arthritis aka Rheumatoid Autoimmune Disease is at a moderate level with the current cocktail of drugs. I will be having another one in three months to get a new number. It looks like anything above 44 is high activity (severe) and under 29 is low or mild activity. It sounded like the goal is to get it under 10. You can find more out about the Vectra DA test on their website. Vectra DA does have a program in place for financial assistance. For an example a single person having an income less than $54,450 a year could qualify.

Calling all Rheumatoid Arthritis patients and their lovegivers, friends and family. Would you be willing to help bring awareness about Rheumatoid Arthritis and the Rheumatoid Patient Foundation? We (patients, family, and caregivers aka lovegivers) can make a difference. I believe patients, family and caregivers are key to improving living with RA and finding a cure for this autoimmune disease (watch Lorenzo's Oil and Burzynski both available on instant play through Netflix).

How can you help? There are many ways you can help bring awareness to Rheumatoid Patient Foundation.

Here are a few ideas on how you can help:

This week I had my first visit with the new Rheumatolgist, Dr. Solomon Forouzesh in Culver City. It was a good first visit, the doctor listened and discussed the issues I have been having with my Rheumatoid Arthritis also known as Rheumatoid Autoimmune Disease (see we refuse to be mislabeled). During my visit I was able to have my blood tests done and a bone density test right there in the office. That was pretty nice, not to do any other paperwork for labs or go somewhere else for tests. Not that I had it hard with my Rheumatologist in Indiana, everything was just down the hall which was also nice. Lloyd even brought in his camera and was able to get some photos throughout the visit without any issues.

There is no class for dealing with sleep and Rheumatoid Arthritis (RA) but it is an art of learning how to position yourself so you can sleep. I have been thinking about writing this post for a couple weeks and then my older sister called today, we were discussing our the aches and pains of Rheumatoid Arthritis (also known as Rheumatoid Autoimmune Disease see we refuse to be mislabeled) . She mentioned she talked to my younger sister who was having some aches and pains. It reminded me last spring when I had talked to my younger sister and she mentioned it was hard to learn to lay on her back when she was dealing with pain in her hips and lower spine. All I could say was yes it is hard to learn to lie on your back.

I have been walking usually twice a day for a few weeks now, which has been a nice change after being pretty much stuck in the house in too much pain. I have notice a change in my pattern of stiffness. Before I started walking, most of the pain was in my shoulders, back and elbows. Since I have been walking more now I deal with stiffness greater in my feet, hips and knees. The last few weeks still have been an improvement in my Rheumatoid Autoimmune Disease (RAD formally RA aka Rheumatoid Arthritis). It seems to help not picking up heavy items or hold anything too long. We went to a Valentine Soiree held by the Lady of Magic at the Redondo Beach Castle.
This week I am still recovering from a pretty bad flare, one I feel was my own fault, but really Rheumatoid Arthritis is at fault. I did not do it on purpose, just a temporary forgetfulness of what I can handle, it happens too often. My boyfriend's son came over to help setup my bed and move around boxes. He also helped out with putting the top of my new desk on and tightening the screws.

The desk was my first error, but I really did not know it would be at the time. Lloyd pulled the box over to the area where I needed to setup my desk. I was excited to get to put something together; strange but I like it. It all went well and I had no pain until I started to have to look up and raise my hands just above my head to screw in a few of the screws. My shoulders started felling a little sore but not bad enough to stop. After the desk was ready, Lloyd headed out the door with his son. I headed into the bedroom to look for things I needed to get my desk organized a little. The boxes were stacked up on top of the dresser and I grabbed a couple down to look in them, yes my second mistake. They were pretty heavy but I felt no pain, at the time.

I had to think about different types of pain. What are the types of pain? What can cause a person physical pain? Some of my thoughts were about bee stings, sunburns, sprained bones, strained muscles, broken bones, torn muscles, headaches, migraines, cuts, surgery, childbirth, being ran over by a truck and even torture. What type of pain would a bee sting cause? I would think it would be acute pain, it can be intense but is usually short lived. Does that even matter?

I have not notice this improve my Rheumatoid Arthritis, but I have not found it giving me any issues either. The first benefit I have found with replacing lunch with around 16 to 19 ounces of juice instead has been weight loss. Since I started juicing I have lost 12 pounds. I have done nothing different and have not changed any medication recently. I have went up a pill of the Methotrexate just recently and I think the one before that was around three months ago. Well actually it started in September of 2010 in mainly my shoulders. Every couple months this past year I have went up a pill in my treatment with Methotrexate, adding more to help reduce the pain, swelling and stiffness. I have improved slowly throughout the last six months, but still dealing with pain, swelling and stiffness daily. My feet are swelling up when I stand or walk to long, which could be within a few minutes to thirty minutes later. Right now I have several great hours a day with very little or no pain and stiffness. She asked me "Are these like nicotine patches?" I said "Sort of why?" She mentioned seeing someone die by nicotine patches on 1000 Ways to Die. I laughed and told her I don't think so. So the next day I did a search to find out and I found many articles about a Notre Dame Girl that died from using to much BenGay and Icy Hot

It has been awhile since I updated so here we go. I switched from Arava to Methotrexate four weeks ago and I'm starting to feel much better now. I am not 100% but 80% is good! Looking forward to being able to carry my camera around and take some good photos :). Still taking Enbrel and B12 shots weekly. Currently enjoying not feeling like I was ran over by a truck.

The new year came and went by so fast! Since I was not feeling well, I did not get to do a post on my resolutions for this year. First, I decided I will go back to a notebook in my purse for my health log. Instead of trying to post what I'm dealing with or how I'm feeling in this blog daily, I will try to do a weekly post in my health log.

Secondly, I decided to start writing more about Rheumatoid Arthritis (RA). It was my intentions last year to have articles on this blog and not just a health log. Unfortunately, I was sick several months during last year, at both the beginning and the end of the year. Winters have always sucked for me. After I start feeling better, I end up spending most of my time catching up on everything that I need to do for my business, kids and home. I am still trying to catch up my photo blog, Geek Good Girl. Last year I started the Project 365 and because of not feeling well the last few months I have not finished the year. I have about 45 more photos to go, so I will be catching that up. I am hoping to start covering more marketing conferences on Geek Good Girl and of course post more photos. I am not going to continue Project 365, that way I will not have to worry about catching it up. Instead, I will post when I feel good or when I cover a conference. :)

Sorry I have not been posting but I have been dealing with a flare. I usually deal with more pain and stiffness in the winter months. Right now I am in California and the pain and stiffness has went down. The stiffness has been in my shoulders. My back was swollen when I got here. The swelling was visible in the muscles in my back. I would say I was at a 7 or 8 on the pain scale when I left Indiana, it dropped to a 4 after about 24 hours here and now I'm down to a 1 or 2.

I also did get plenty of exercise in while we were in Europe. I really can not believe how much walking I did in Dublin. It was great! I am really amazed how much I was able to stay on my feet this trip compared to last year. We spent the day at VidCon 2010 and my hands did stiffen up a little while holding the camera for a long time, it went away when I stopped.
Day 13 of my Rheumatoid Arthritis health log. Yesterday I forgot to mention that my shoulders were stiff and tender after the flight, pain level around a 3. So this morning I woke up around 5:30 am, some tenderness still in the shoulders but went away shortly after getting out of bed, pain level a 1, just annoying. We started off the day with a walk to the local Starbucks, I had a venti Mocha and egg with bacon sandwich.

Next we packed up the Harley and headed to Las Vegas. This was my furthest ride so far on a motorcycle. We stopped around two hours after we left to get gas. It was good timing I needed to move, so I walked around for about 10 to 15 minutes until the pain dropped from a 4 to 0. Then we were back on the road for another hour, during this time I did have to lift my feet up to the bar around the bike. I also put my feet up on my boyfriends legs to relieve some pain. When we stopped at a rest stop I took 10 to 15 minutes to walk around, pain was around a 4 and dropped to 0.

I had a venti mocha on the way to the airport. After around five hours in a plane I was ready to be off! I made it to Los Angeles and enjoyed a ride on my boyfriends new Harley-Davidson. After an hour and a half my hips were getting sore from riding, pain level 2. We stopped for a little bit and I walked around. When we took off I tried a suggestion my sister gave me and sat my feet on my boyfriends legs. This stretched out the hip and relieved the pressure. Some stress this morning when a police officer showed up at my house. It is frustrating to have a neighbor that calls the police anytime the dog barks or something happens at his house and he blames my son.
Day 6 of my Rheumatoid Arthritis health log. This morning I woke up with tender shoulders. They were only tender for about 30 minutes and pain level was a 1 (just annoying). Also this morning I have had itchy and dry eyes, more in the right eye. I'm thinking the itchy eyes are from allergies, the weather shows pollen to be high here.

So this afternoon it stormed, I guess now I know why I woke up with sore shoulders. Seems to happen often enough that I feel the storm before it shows up.

Day 5 of my Rheumatoid Arthritis health log. I slept in a little this morning (10:30 am) but I did stay up a little late last night. No pain or stiffness today. I did feel a little wiped out, probably from not getting my 8 hours and staying up late.

Day 4 of my Rheumatoid Arthritis health log. This is starting to sound like Captains log stardate 2010.05.29, really! Today was a great day, no elliptical or Bowflex. I usually spend Saturdays with my camera and friend if we are both in town. So we walked around town taking photos. Holding that camera is exercise at times, it has taken some time for me to be able to handle carrying it. Now I have a bigger and heavier lens as well as a flash. So I did get a little tenderness in my shoulders and stiffness in my hand. What did I do? Switched sides! So the pain did not last long and was just a level 1 (annoying).

Day 3 of my Rheumatoid Arthritis health log. Today I had no stiffness or tenderness. No exercise this morning, but I did go for a bike ride around the subdivision this evening.

I had a granola bar for breakfast, chicken for lunch and a salad for dinner.

Day 1 of my Rheumatoid Arthritis health log. Today I woke up feeling good, had my latte and headed downstairs to workout. I did a total of one hour on my elliptical and fifteen minutes on the Bowflex. Currently I am trying to do intervals between the machines. Fifteen minutes on the elliptical then five on the Bowflex concentrating on core body muscles with only ten pounds for resistance. The elliptical I have set to manual. Last year I tried setting the resistance up one on the elliptical and it did not work out well for me.

I have been wanting to find the time to start this health log for about 45 days now and realized I must make a little time to do it each day. I have a little notebook I have used for about a year as a health log, I just need to switch to just making a post in this blog instead. I have found that log to be very helpful in helping me find issues I have whether it was with food or exercise changes to just realizing how much stiffness I was dealing with and how long. What made me think of doing this? Currently I do a photo a day on Geek Good Girl called Project 365. Project 365 was a way for people to document their life over a year with a photo. I am hoping this health log might be helpful not just for me but for others dealing with Rheumatoid Arthritis.

This post will go over what has been happening with my health so far this year. Then I will do a quick post about today next. Okay, time to start!
