I have often reviewed websites for those looking for search engine optimization. Sometimes I find basic website problems that can be easily fixed. One of the most common ones is 404 errors.
404 Errors
404 errors happen when someone goes to a web page on your domain. The web page is no longer available, this generates a 404 error. This problem is easily fixed by implementing a custom 404 web page with htaccess. The 404 webpage should have information letting the potential customer know that the web page is no longer available. A link to your homepage and sitemap is recommended, this allows the customer to find what they were looking for.
I have seen websites that had no 404 to web host 404’s. Why allow your traffic to go to a web hosts 404 ad page? I have see this even on paid web hosts.
Domain Typos
It isn’t always easy to find domain typos in links you have submitted, or links you never submitted yourself. Always be careful when typing in the domain name of your website when submitting links. Also check Yahoo for your Local Search Engine listing, you may have one
there and not even know it. I have seen typos in Yahoo Local search results.
If your domain is wrong in Yahoo Local search, check to see if the domain they listed is available. If so purchase it and do a 301 redirect to the correct website. Also send a request to Yahoo to
correct the domain listing.
