Google and Meta Descriptions
Where is all the good information?
Today I decided to stop by a friends site SEO Book. Aaron’s site is almost like the water cooler at the office. You can find little bits and pieces of information he comes across in his blog. Often when I need to research some area I’m not familiar with, I will stop by and use the search on his site to see if he has came across anything on that topic.
How Important is Meta Description Tags?
Today Aaron has a post about meta description tags. He mentions an article by Dan Thies about Google dropping site snippets. It is a very good article going over what Google picks up and questioning what might happen if there is no meta description tag on your website.
Impact of No Meta Description Tag
What would be the impact of this with your website? If Google no longer takes snippets of your website and relies on meta description tags, DMOZ descriptions or Yahoo descriptions? If you don’t have a meta description tag what choices will be left? What if they drop taking descriptions from DMOZ and rely only on the meta description tag? Would your websites be prepared for that?
Build Your Website for Possibilites
Over the last few years webmasters, SEO’s and companies have continued to try to master ranking high on search engines. Some will rank, some will not and many will fall. Eventually, it happens to everyone. Search Engines are constantly changing. Focus your time on
building a quality site with content that converts in the way you intend it to.
I have said this over and over, if it doesn’t take much time, and it doesn’t hurt your rankings then it is better to do it then not. Every search engine out there is different, ranks a little different, and may or may not be as popular. Build your site to work with all search engines, even the little ones. You never know what might change later on.
